AllowanceQuest Privacy Notice
Version 2026-10-19 · DRAFT for attorney review. Items in [brackets] must be filled in before launch.
AllowanceQuest is a family chore and rewards app. Kids turn in chores from a family device, and their parents approve them and track money, screen time and rewards. Because children use AllowanceQuest, we follow the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the FTC's COPPA Rule. This notice explains what we collect, why, who handles it, how long we keep it, and the choices parents have.
The short version
- A parent sets everything up. Kids never need an email address, and they can only sign in with a PIN on a device their parent approved.
- About a child, we keep a first name, an optional birth year, a scrambled PIN, the look they pick, the chores they turn in, and what they earn and spend. Photo or video proof is collected only if a parent separately turns it on.
- No ads. No analytics or tracking scripts. We never sell or rent anyone's information, and we don't use it to train AI.
- Parents can see, download or delete everything at any time.
- Photos and videos delete themselves on a schedule. Families that go unused for two years are deleted, after an email warning.
Who we are
AllowanceQuest is operated by [Operator legal name], [a sole proprietor / LLC], [mailing address], [phone]. Email: support@allowancequest.com. This is the contact for every privacy question or request. No other operator collects or maintains children's personal information through AllowanceQuest.
Information we collect
From parents and other grown-ups
- Email address and first name. Used to create the account, sign you in with one-time codes, and send account and consent notices.
- Family set-up. Your family name, board title, time zone, the chores and rewards you create, your approvals, and your settings.
- Other grown-ups you invite. If you invite a co-parent, grandparent or sitter, we use the email address you give us to send them the invitation.
- Notifications. If you turn on notifications, your browser gives us a delivery address for your device, called a push subscription. Notifications go only to grown-ups.
- Billing. If you subscribe, Stripe collects your payment details. We never see or store your card number. We keep the Stripe customer and subscription IDs and your plan status.
- Waitlist. If you join the waitlist, we keep the email you enter and, optionally, how many kids you have.
About children
A parent enters most of this. The rest is created when the child uses the app.
- First name. We don't need or want last names.
- Birth year. Optional.
- A 4-digit PIN. Stored only in scrambled (salted and hashed) form.
- Looks. The face (an emoji), theme and celebration animation the child or parent picks.
- Activity.
- The chores the child turns in, including the time spent if they use the Start/Finish timer, and an optional short note of up to 140 characters to their parents.
- What they earn and spend: money amounts, screen-time minutes and stars, all as records only.
- The rewards they ask for, and when screen time starts and stops.
- Optional Venmo username, for teens with a Venmo Teen account. A parent can enter it to get a pre-filled "Pay with Venmo" link.
- Photo or video proof, only if a parent turns it on (Premium, after separate consent; see below).
We do not collect a child's email address, phone number, home address, precise location, contacts, voice recordings or any government ID. Children cannot message anyone. Messages ("cheers") go one way only, from the family's grown-ups to the child. We do not require a child to give more information than is reasonably needed to use a feature.
Collected automatically
- Two cookies, both strictly necessary.
- A sign-in cookie that keeps a grown-up or child signed in.
- A device cookie that marks a device a parent approved for kids.
- We use these identifiers only to run the app (keeping people signed in, security, and preventing fraud and abuse), never to advertise to or profile anyone, and never to contact a child.
- Technical data. Our hosting provider processes IP addresses and basic request information to deliver pages and protect against attacks. We do not store IP addresses in our database.
- No analytics. We do not use analytics, advertising, social-media or tracking scripts. Our security settings block third-party scripts on every page.
How we use information
Only to provide AllowanceQuest to your family:
- showing the chore board
- keeping balances and history
- notifying your family's grown-ups
- sending sign-in, consent and account emails
- processing Premium subscriptions
- providing support
- keeping the service secure
We use waitlist emails only to tell you when AllowanceQuest opens.
We do not:
- show ads, or use any information for advertising or marketing to children
- build profiles of children
- sell or rent personal information, or share it for others' marketing
- use children's information to train artificial-intelligence models
Who handles it
We share information only with service providers that help us run AllowanceQuest. They act on our behalf, may use it only to provide their services to us, and must keep it secure:
| Provider | What they do | What they handle |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Hosting, database, file storage, security | All app data, including children's information and proof files |
| Resend | Sending emails to grown-ups | Grown-ups' email addresses and the email content |
| Stripe | Subscription billing | Grown-ups' payment and billing details |
| Apple, Google, Mozilla, Microsoft push services | Delivering notifications to grown-ups' devices | The notification text (for example, "Leo finished Make your bed") |
Things a parent chooses to share:
- Co-parent invites. Every grown-up in the family can see that family's information.
- Calendar link. A parent can create a private calendar link that lists a child's first name and chores. Anyone with the link can see it, and the calendar app it's added to (such as Apple, Google or Outlook) will hold a copy. A parent can turn the old link off by making a new one.
- Venmo link. Tapping it opens Venmo with the amount and a short note filled in, and Venmo handles the payment. We never hold or move money.
- Downloads. A parent can download the family's data.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect a child's safety, or to investigate fraud or security problems. If AllowanceQuest is ever sold or merged, children's information would move only under this notice's protections, and parents would be told first.
Photos and videos (Premium, off by default)
Proof photos and videos are collected only if all of these are true:
- The family has Premium.
- A parent gives a separate, explicit consent in Family → Privacy.
- The parent switches proof on for that particular child.
Then:
- Only the family's signed-in grown-ups and the child who took a photo or video can see it. Files have no public link.
- Photos are re-drawn on the device before upload, and checked again on our server. This removes location and camera data.
- For videos, we remove the location tags that phones normally add, but other camera details may remain. Turning off location for the camera app avoids this entirely.
- Proof deletes itself automatically after the period the parent picks (7–90 days, default 30). A parent can delete any photo sooner. Withdrawing consent deletes all of the family's photos and videos (within the hour) and turns proof off.
- We ask kids to show the chore, not their face.
- We never use photos or videos for any other purpose, and we never share them.
How long we keep information
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Proof photos and videos | The parent's setting (7–90 days, default 30). Sooner if deleted or consent is withdrawn. |
| A family's records (kids, chores, history, balances, activity log) | Until the parent deletes the child or the family. If a family is unused for 24 months, we email the owner, and we delete everything 30 days later unless someone signs in. Paying subscribers are not auto-deleted. |
| Sign-in codes, expired sign-ins, PIN-attempt records | About 2 days |
| In-app notifications | 60 days |
| Waitlist emails | Until we send the "we're open" email, or 12 months, whichever comes first |
| Backups | Deleted information ages out of our provider's backups within 30 days |
We keep children's information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose it was collected for.
Parents' rights
At any time, a parent or guardian can:
- Review what we hold about their child: Family → Download everything.
- Correct it: edit it in the app.
- Delete a child, with all of their history, balances and photos: Kids → Edit → Delete.
- Delete the whole family: Family → Delete this family.
- Withdraw photo consent, which deletes all photos and videos.
- Refuse further collection, by deleting the child's profile. This stops all further collection of that child's information.
You can also email support@allowancequest.com. We'll verify that you're the parent on the account and respond within [30] days.
Consent
- At sign-up. When you create a family, you confirm you are the parent or legal guardian and consent to the collection and use described here, before any child's information is entered. The next day, we send a follow-up email confirming the account. If you didn't create it, reply and we'll delete it.
- For photos and videos. These require a separate, explicit consent from the family owner, on a paid (Premium) account.
- For anything new. We'll ask again before collecting any new kind of information from children or using it in a new way.
Security
We keep a written information security program, including:
- encryption of all traffic
- emailed one-time sign-in codes, with no passwords to steal
- kid sign-in only on approved devices
- private, non-public file storage
- strict browser security settings
- automated tests that check one family can't see another's information
- limited access by our own staff (our admin tools show counts, not children's names, chores or photos)
If a breach affects your family's information, we'll notify you, and anyone else the law requires.
Who AllowanceQuest is for
AllowanceQuest is for families in the United States. Accounts are for adults 18 and older. Children use AllowanceQuest only through a profile their parent creates. If you believe a child has created an account or given us information without a parent, email support@allowancequest.com and we'll delete it.
Changes to this notice
We'll post any change here with a new version date. Before any material change to how we handle children's information, we'll email parents and, where the law requires, get new consent first.
